The sought after Mazda MX-5 Miata has been a popular choice for a sports car in America for more than a decade. Its recipe for success has always included a stylish design, awesome driving experience, affordability, and reliability. In other words, it blends the best aspects of sports cars from the 1960s and 1970s, adds in a touch of Japanese sensibility, and finishes off with modern comforts and technologies.

Fuel economy in the past has not been a major selling factor for a sports car, but as we turn the corner into a new era of car design, it may play a bigger role. Word has been getting around that the next-generation version of the Mazda MX-5 Miata could be offered with a diesel option.

This new engine would complement the car's current engine: a 1.6-liter, naturally-aspirate SKYACTIV gasoline motor. This is the stock engine, but it's often accompanied by more powerful variants (as in the current Mazda MX-5 Miata).

The introduction of a Diesel engine may not come as a surprise to some Mazda fans as it is becoming more prevalent in the U.S. market due to its newer, cleaner design. Mazda even has a diesel-powered Mazda6 race car, which is expected to make its way to some endurance events in the near future.
