When the Mazda RX-8, a replacement to the beloved Mazda RX-7 sports car which featured Mazda's famous rotary engine, many of us thought that was it for the rotary. Now we are being told that the brand is considering a reincarnation of the iconic engine by producing a new model known as the as the Mazda RX-9. This is merely a sketch plan thus far and nothing has come to fruition in regards to production.
The rotary-powered sports car would sit at the top of the new Mazda lineup and would be a major contender to vehicles such as the Nissan Z-car. Compared to the RX-7, The RX-9 would only have seating for two seats but it would keep its same front-engine, rear-wheel drive layout.
The original rotary engine would more than likely go into the new model, though later versions could feature a turbo charged variant if it can be developed to be reliable and meet fuel economy and emission targets/requirements.
As mentioned before, nothing has been confirmed as of yet. Mazda plans to hold out and assess the European economic situation before they invest in another sports car. However, their five year plan does include rolling out a new model that features a rotary engine.
