Motor Oil Myths Debunked

Car owners know and understand that their cars oil needs to be changed, but with so many myths out there it is confusing as to when you should perform oil changes. Below are two common motor oil myths, followed by the truth:

MYTH: Motor oil must be changed every 3,000 miles.

FACT: How often your motor oil needs to be changed will listed in your car owner’s manual and can range anywhere from 3,000 to 10,000 miles. Many of us grew up with changing engine oil every 3,000 miles, but due to improvements in motor oil as well as improvements in car engines it is unnecessary to change your motor oil every 3,000 miles.

MYTH: Black motor oil must be changed.

FACT: The color of your motor oil has little to do with whether it needs to be changed. The purpose of motor oil is to lubricate the engine and absorb debris that can cause damage to the engine. If your motor oil is no longer amber is color it means the motor oil is doing its job and picking up harmful debris.
